Education Program
Academic Probation and Retention / Failure Policy
Students who are not meeting Stoneybrooke’s minimum academic standards will be dealt with in the following manner:
Academic Probation
Standard: Recognizing the need for one to do his/her very best work (1 Corinthians 10:31), Stoneybrooke requires that a student work to his/her potential and maintain at least a “C” (2.0) average in his/her academic classes.
Subjects not considered academic include penmanship and enrichment classes. Bible will be considered an academic class.
Should a student not maintain a “C” average, he/she will be placed on Academic Probation the following quarter.
Procedure: If a student is placed on Academic Probation, he/she must improve to a “C” average the following quarter. While on Academic Probation the student will be monitored closely and will lose student privileges such as participation on a sports team, student council, etc., for a minimum of two weeks. Once the student can demonstrate a sustained improvement in their grades (a “C” average for a minimum two-week period) they may, with the administrator/teacher approval, be able to resume prior activities; however, they will still be on Academic Probation status for the remainder of the quarter.
Exclusion: A student who has an identifiable learning disability.
Retention/Failure
Standard: Students must pass each subject (achieving at least 60%) for three quarters in an academic year or he/she will fail that subject for the year.
Procedure: If a student fails (achieves below 60% for any two quarters) in two or more academic subjects in a school year, he/she has not met the standards, will fail that grade and therefore not be promoted.
Academic subjects include reading, spelling, language, math, history, science and Bible.
Exclusion: A student who has an identifiable learning disability.
The administration may make additional demands on students whose grades are below standard in one or more subjects for them to be promoted to the next grade.
Chapel Services
All students will attend chapel, appropriately designed for their grade level, on a weekly basis. Chapel attendance is mandatory. Parents are invited to attend our chapel services.
Students should wear the appropriate chapel uniform on Chapel days (please see our Student Dress Code).
Elementary Curriculum
Our curriculum concerns itself with the development of the whole child. We are offering a strong, basic education that includes a comprehensive enrichment program.
Bible is taught as a separate subject, as well as integrated throughout the entire curriculum. While stressing the fundamentals of the Christian faith, we teach from a non-denominational viewpoint.
Homework Policy
- 1st grade - 20 minutes
- 2nd / 3rd grade – 30 minutes
- 4th grade – 40 minutes
- 5th grade – 50 minutes
- 6th grade – 60 minutes
Grading Policies and Procedures
To provide for consistency in grading, the following policies and procedures have been established.
In Junior Kindergarten
1. Achievement
- M — Mastery of skills and concepts for this quarter
- G — Growing and developing skills and concepts for this quarter
- P — Practice required to progress in skills and concepts this quarter
2. Effort
- O — Outstanding
- S+ — Above Satisfactory
- S — Satisfactory
- S- — Below Satisfactory
- N — Needs Improvement
3. Attitude, Effort and Participation
Attitude, effort and participation are the primary determining factors of enrichment grades. Outstanding ability or knowledge of the subject may contribute to the grade; however, they are secondary factors.
- O — Student stands out from the class in attitude, effort and participation
- S+ — Student goes above and beyond satisfying the teacher’s expectations
- S — Student follows the teacher’s rules and satisfies their expectations
- S- — Student has difficulty following the teacher’s rules and satisfying their expectations
- N — Student has disruptive behavior and does not satisfy the teacher’s expectations
In Kindergarten and 1st Grade
1. Achievement
- M — Mastery of skills and concepts for this quarter*
- G — Growing and developing skills and concepts for this quarter*
- P — Practice required to progress in skills and concepts this quarter*
* Expectation levels for skills and concepts increase each quarter
2. Effort

In 2nd-6th Grade
There is a three-fold system of evaluation:
- Achievement: The extent to which the pupil has mastered the subject (indicated by an A, B, C, D, or F). Skill development areas are also to be noted.
- Effort: The relationship between the pupil’s achievement and his/her ability to achieve, indicated by an (O) Outstanding, (S+) Above Satisfactory, (S) Satisfactory, (S-) Below Satisfactory or (N) Needs Improvement.
- Habits and Attitudes and Character Development: A checklist of work and study habits, social development, health and safety, spiritual growth, etc.
- Grade Level Skill Development: 1 = Exceeding, 2 = Meeting, 3 = Developing, NA = Not Applicable
| A+ = 98–100% | B+ = 88–89% | C+ = 78–79% | D+ = 68–69% | F = Below 60% |
| A = 93–97% | B = 83–87% | C = 73–77% | D = 63–67% | |
| A- = 90–92% | B- = 80–82% | C- = 70–72% | D- = 60–62% |
In Junior High
Junior High teachers may employ many diagnostic tools to arrive at the grade a student receives on his/her report card. Some of these tools include tests, quizzes, homework, classroom discussion and participation, and seatwork. The quarter grade is based on the final percentage earned. Grades are assigned as follows:
| A+ = 98–100% | B+ = 88–89% | C+ = 78–79% | D+ = 68–69% | F = Below 60% |
| A = 93–97% | B = 83–87% | C = 73–77% | D = 63–67% | |
| A- = 90–92% | B- = 80–82% | C- = 70–72% | D- = 60–62% |
A student’s effort and classroom decorum will also be noted on the report card. Homework policy for Junior High is not more than 70 minutes a night for 7th grade and 80 minutes a night for 8th grade, avoiding weekend assignments. However, 7th/8th grade students taking Algebra 1, Geometry, Spanish 1 and/or any Honors courses may expect up to an additional 20 minutes per course per night and receive assignments over the weekends.
Modified Educational Plan
If a student is receiving a formal modified educational plan (with academic modifications), they are ineligible for academic honors.
Academic Honors
- For grades 2-6, two types of honors are to be reported.
- Principal’s List – all “A” grades for the marking period (excluding Handwriting)
- Honor Roll – all “A”s, no more than three “B”s (excluding Handwriting) and no “C”s.
- For Junior High: Honor Roll is 3.5 to 3.9; Principal’s List is 4.0 (straight “A”s).
- If a student is receiving a formal modified educational plan (with academic modifications), they are ineligible for academic honors.
- Those students qualifying for academic honors will be acknowledged quarterly in the Stoneybrooke Admin Notes. Names of students receiving academic honors should be turned into the office by teachers in accordance with the schedule established at the beginning of the school year. For the fourth grading period, academic honors should be handed out at the class graduation or before the last day of school.
