Cell Phones and Smart Watches
Cell phones are not permitted to be used by students from the time they are dropped off and until they are checked out of school. Students that bring cell phones to school must have them turned off and in their backpacks during school time. This includes all field trips and spring trips. Phones will be confiscated from students for: having them out of their backpacks, the cell phone ringing in class, or if the cell phone is in use anytime during the restricted time period. Confiscated phones may be examined for inappropriate content.
Students who need to call their parents during the day must get permission from the office and use the office phone. After school, students must get permission from the office or the teacher at check out and call with the adult present.
Smart Watches are not allowed.
Violation Consequence
Students who are in violation will receive an afternoon detention, have their phone or Smart Watch confiscated and the phone or Smart Watch will be released to the parent.
Subsequent offenses will result in further discipline.
Cell phone violations during a spring trip may result in a suspension on the first offense.
Personal Electronic Devices for Elementary Students
Students may not have portable electronic equipment at school. The only exception is a personal EReader (approved by the teacher) that does not have internet connectivity.
Electronic readers which enhance learning can be utilized. The following rules will be in force for these types of devices:
- The school will not be held liable for damage or loss to any electronic devices brought to school.
- The school is not responsible for content that may be on the device. The teacher or administrator has the right to check all content on the device at any time for appropriateness.
- Students may not bring any personal electronic device which has the capability to access the internet.
- Students will not be allowed to use these devices on break or during their lunch period. If permission has been granted, they may be used in after-school daycare as a reader only (not to play games).
- Students may not access or share with others any inappropriate content residing on their device.
- Students are not to attempt to use the device in any way to cheat or otherwise wrongfully gain answers or information that is required for class for themselves or others.
- If a student does not follow the guidelines, their privilege to bring the device to school may be revoked at any time by an administrator and further disciplinary measures may be taken.
Chromebook User Agreement for Junior High Students
Having a 1:1 Chromebook program is a great privilege that gives students immediate access to an infinite amount of information and the ability to create movies, art, slideshows and many other types of projects. It’s the school’s goal to host a safe network environment using firewalls, web content filtering and MDM software that limits the exposure of the devices to harmful content on the Internet.
There is no replacement for wisdom and sound judgement as Stoneybrooke students are held to high standards with their Chromebook usage and specifically the content that is uploaded and downloaded from the device. With that in mind, Stoneybrooke students shall agree to abide by the following rules and guidelines.
- I will bring the Chromebook to school fully charged every day. Junior high classes require students to have access to their Chromebook throughout the day. Stoneybrooke will provide loaner Chromebooks, when available, but on a very limited basis to students.
- I will charge the Chromebook at home, not school. Students will be issued a wall-charger with the Chromebook which should be kept at home. The Chromebook’s battery should last throughout the school day with a full charge, therefore wall-charging or using the Chromebook while plugged into the wall will not be allowed at school. *Students may bring their own portable battery charger to use at their desk.
- I will protect and care for the Chromebook. It is required that students provide a case or cover for the Chromebook. Leaving the device in a backpack unprotected will likely cause damage to it during transport. *The case should fit an 11.6” Chromebook.
- I will not cause damage to the Chromebook. Students will be held responsible for any intentional or accidental damage they cause to the Chromebook. Likewise, if the device is lost or stolen, replacement will be at the student’s expense.
- I will not decorate or alter any part of the Chromebook. Adding stickers or writing of any kind on the Chromebook is not allowed and might result in repair or replacement fees.
- I will use the Chromebook at school only in designated places for student learning. Chromebooks should be used primarily in class or, as directed by the teacher, in appropriate places such as the library or sanctuary. Chromebooks should never be used in the restroom.
- I will use the Chromebook responsibly, accessing websites and apps only as directed. The Chromebook will run GoGuardian content filtering software to protect students both on and off campus. Regardless, students should be mindful to only visit appropriate websites and apps.
- I will allow software and apps to update regularly as directed by the Stoneybrooke IT staff. Students may not remove or circumvent any management settings or software established by the school and should report any problems with the device.
- I will use discretion and only share appropriate content with others. Students will have many opportunities to share content with others for group projects and assignments. This should be done with the teacher’s direction and guidance.
- I will only take photos or videos of teachers or students with their permission. Students will use the Chromebook cameras for a variety of projects and assignments. If others are being recorded it must be done with their knowledge and permission.
- I will use the Chromebook responsibly and honestly to complete projects and assignments. Students should not make any attempt to use the Chromebook to cheat or otherwise wrongfully gain answers or information that is required for class for themselves or others.
- I will use school email responsibly and as directed by the teacher. All students have access to a school Google account which allows for email communication and other collaborative tools. Students will not have access to personal email on student Chromebooks.
- I will not use the Chromebook to access social media. Students may not access social media sites such as, but not limited to, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok or SnapChat.
Good to Know
A Stoneybrooke staff member may audit the student Chromebook at any time without prior warning.
If a student does not follow the above guidelines, their Chromebook privileges may be revoked at any time by an administrator and further disciplinary measures may be taken.
Photograph and Media Policy
To recognize the great work our students do, Stoneybrooke Christian School occasionally publishes students’ names, photographs and achievements in our school publications or posts them on the school’s website. The school might also videotape student performances and activities or release general details about students’ achievements to local newspapers, television and radio stations. This information may also become available to the general public through electronic means.
In this day and time with the technology that is available to everyone, there is absolutely no way for the school to ensure that specific student photos do not appear on the school’s website, classroom teacher’s web pages, parents’ web pages or related sites that could contain student photos for parent/grandparent downloading. Stoneybrooke will not identify photos of specific students by their last name without parent permission.
The school administration and staff will go to great lengths to protect students’ identities for obvious reasons, but it is impossible to guarantee that photos of individual students would not appear electronically on various sites that the school has no control over.
Video Recording of Student Productions
While Stoneybrooke does not enforce a policy for video recording during student productions, i.e., musicals, graduations, chapels, etc., we do ask that as a courtesy to those seated around you, that you please be sensitive to the viewing of others while filming.
Internet Use
Internet User Agreement
Since Stoneybrooke is expanding its use of technology, an outline of student’s expected behavior seems appropriate. Although Stoneybrooke will make use of appropriate firewall systems, it is the student’s responsibility to abide by the policies and procedures of our program. A student should strive to be a testimony for Jesus Christ both in person and on the Internet. As such, the following conditions apply for use of the Stoneybrooke Christian School’s computing facilities and access to the Internet:
Student Expectations:
- Students will respect the privacy of themselves and others. In light of personal safety:
- Students will not post personal contact information about themselves or other people
- Students will not send and receive personal email
- Students will not agree to meet with someone they have met online without their parent or guardian’s approval
- Students will immediately notify the teacher, the network administrator, or other school employee about any message received that is inappropriate or makes one feel uncomfortable
- Students will respect the integrity of Stoneybrooke Christian School’s computing systems. Students shall not intentionally use programs that damage or alter the software on Stoneybrooke Christian School’s network. If a student is responsible for a computer becoming infected with viruses or worms, they will be held liable and disciplined as necessary. In addition, hacking, piracy, compromising network security tampering with hardware or software, or vandalism of computer equipment are serious offenses which will result in a minimum of immediate suspension of all network privileges. Students will not download or install any software to any computer without the express permission and under the direction of the System Administrator. This included software brought from home or other outside resources.
- Students will respect the legal protection provided by copyrights and licenses.
- Students will respect the finite capacity of the system and limit its use so as not to interfere unreasonably with the activity of other users.
- Students will respect the procedures established to manage the use of the system.
All students should be aware that the inappropriate use of electronic information resources could be a violation of local, state, and federal laws. Violations can and will lead to prosecution at the discretion of Stoneybrooke Christian School, or community, state or federal authorities.
Users may not:
- Install software onto the Stoneybrooke Christian School computer network.
- Send or receive messages that indicate or suggest adult, unethical or illegal solicitation, racism, sexism, or inappropriate language, or intentionally visit websites that promote any of this material.
- Intentionally alter or deface other users’ files without the user’s permission
- Use the network or its computers for commercial or for-profit purposes.
The Internet: Moral and Ethical Issues
Inappropriate Material: While acknowledging that inappropriate materials exist, Stoneybrooke will do everything we can to actively avoid them. Even though the school utilizes robust filters and fire walls in its network, unfortunately, we cannot weed out all the materials that are unacceptable for students, so it should be clearly understood by all students that access to such material in any form is strictly forbidden. The network is designed to achieve and support instructional goals, and any information that does not support classroom learning is to be avoided.
Plagiarism and the Internet: The dictionary defines plagiarism as “taking ideas or writings from another person and offering them as your own.” The student who leads readers to believe that what they are reading is the student’s original work when it is not, is guilty of plagiarism, and will receive the appropriate discipline for dishonest work.
In order to utilize Stoneybrooke’s access to the Internet, an agreement must be made between the school and the student and the parent or legal guardian.
Stoneybrooke Christian School does not have control of the information on the Internet, although they have gone above and beyond to provide prudent and available barriers. Other sites accessible via the Internet may contain material that is illegal, defamatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive to some people. Stoneybrooke Christian School believes that the benefits to educators and students from access to the Internet, in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration, far exceed any disadvantages of access.
The student and his/her parent(s) or guardian(s) must understand that student access to the Stoneybrooke Christian School network is being developed to support the schools’ educational responsibilities and mission. The specific conditions and services being offered will change from time to time. Stoneybrooke Christian School makes no guarantee that the functions or the services provided by or through the network or Internet will be error-free or without defect. In addition, Stoneybrooke Christian School does not assume liability for:
- The content of any advice or information received by a student from a source outside Stoneybrooke Christian School, or any costs or charges incurred as a result of seeing or accepting such advice.
- Any cost, liability or damages caused by the way the student chooses to use his/her time.
- Any damage you may suffer, including but not limited to, loss of data or interruptions of service. Stoneybrooke Christian School will not be held responsible for financial obligations arising through the unauthorized use of the system.
The student’s use of the Stoneybrooke Christian School computer network must be consistent with the school’s philosophy and mission.
- The student will not use the Stoneybrooke Christian School computer network for illegal purposes.
- The student will not use the Stoneybrooke Christian School network for personal business.
- The student will not use the Stoneybrooke Christian School network to transmit threatening, obscene, or harassing materials. Stoneybrooke Christian School will not be held responsible if the student participates in such activities.
- The student will not use the Stoneybrooke Christian School network to interfere with or disrupt network users, services or equipment. Disruptions include, but are not limited to, distribution of unsolicited advertising, propagation of computer worms or viruses, and using the network to make unauthorized entry to any other machine accessible via the network.
- It is assumed that information and resources available via the Stoneybrooke Christian School network are the private property of the individuals and organizations that own or hold rights to those resources and information unless specifically stated otherwise by the owners or holders of these rights. Therefore, the student will not use the Stoneybrooke Christian School network to access information or resources unless permission to do so has been granted by the owners or holders of rights to those resources or information.
